KILLJOYS – Season 1 Episode 7 – SPOILERS
D’AVIN: “You never did explain that whole royal harem thing.”
DUTCH: “What about it?”
D’AVIN: “I just want to know if I’m bedding a warrior princess.”
DUTCH: “Actually, yes, but that was after my marriage.”
After D”Avin and Dutch have sex, the show (one might theorize) needed to stop the audience from losing interest in the characters because of the premature resolution of their relationship. Something or someone had to intervene to end the sexual interaction while still allowing them to still care for one another. Michelle Lovretta wrote this episode, and she solved the problem in an interesting, if convoluted way.
D’Avin’s ex, Pawter Sims (Sarah Power), gets the team a lead on a patient of the mysterious Dr. Jaeger, a fellow named Grayson Hicks. After they break him out of the mental hospital, and get busted for doing that, another Qreshi, Delle Seyah (Mayko Nguyen), comes to Dutch’s rescue, and the two of them have a somewhat flirtatious exchange through the prison bars:
DELLE: “I do so love rescuing a damsel in distress. A little trade, just between us girls. The Company will drop all charges against you in exchange for a future favour of my choosing.”
DUTCH: “Couldn’t you just hire me?”
DELLE: “It’ll be off the books. No questions. No hesitations. I snap and you come”
DUTCH: “You must be one hell of a snapper.”
Having freed Grayson Hicks (Mark O’Brien) the team heads to Utopia, an artificial satellite of Qresh outside the laws of The Quad. Hicks points Dutch in the direction of Dr. Bliss (Sarain Boylan) who has stolen Jaeger’s ideas and refined them a bit. (Bliss can not only erase memories, she can implant them.) Johnny goes off in search a techie named Carleen (Danka Scepanovic) to get her to fix the neural link. (He broke the thing at the beginning of the episode when he attempted to interface with it.)
Not only does Delle Seyah Kendry get Dutch out of jail, she arranges for Dr. Jaeger’s guards to disappear for a bit so that Dutch and the boys can have a meet with her, and they learn that Jaeger did erase D’Avin’s memories Always impulsive, D’Avin immediately wants to let her restore all the lost bits of his past, but Dutch orders him to think about it for a while. After the Killjoys leave, Jaeger sends a signal to D’Avin’s brain that turns him into a killing machine and makes his teammates his targets.
The hijacking of D’Avin’s brain happens at a rather awkward moment, that being right after sex with Dutch. Dutch wins the ensuing fight, but while she knows D’Avin was not himself when he attacked her, she still can’t bring herself to be close to him again. The sexual tension is restored and shelved.
Dutch resolves the Dr. Jaeger issue by wiping the scientist’s memories (with the aid of her assistant (Daniel Falk). Why Dutch trusts the assistant is unclear. Even if she destroyed all of Jaeger’s records, it seems at least possible that the assistant might remember enough to continue the work.
Before Jaeger’s programming is disabled, D’Avin stabs Johnny and almost kills him. Lucy calls Doc Sims, and we learn that Johnny’s blood type is ‘O’ and that Pawter’s full name is Eleana Seyah Sims (no Pawter in there at all. Maybe it’s a nickname.) and she has enough power to threaten the captain of a medical ship with being “staked in the rain” (apparently a very bad thing). Note that the middle name is the same as that of Delle Seyah Kendry.
Sarain Boylan (Dr. Bliss) was the warden in LOST GIRL episode 3.1 Caged Fae. She also appeared on ORPHAN BLACK as the neolutionist Astrid (episode 1.7, dressed in black, with one white contact lens).
Mark O’Brien (Grayson Hicks) will be Captain Marks in STORY OF YOUR LIFE, a Denis Villeneuve film based on a short story by Ted Chiang about a linguist (Amy Adams) who is hired by the military to determine if alien ships which have landed in various places on earth are a threat. Currently filming in Montreal and Bas-Saint-Laurent, the film should be released sometime next year. (Villeneuve directed the Oscar-nominated 2010 film INCENDIES.)
Emily Andras, now the showrunner for next year’s SyFy series WYNONNA EARP, has sort of autographed the KILLJOYS series because Andras (Hungarian pronunciation) is Johnny Jaqobis’ middle name. It’s kind of like when, in the LOST GIRL episode O Kappa My Kappa (also written by Michelle Lovretta) Andras’ picture turned up on the wall of the sorority house.
Playing while Johnny is being operated on is STARE INTO THE LIGHT, track #4 on the
EP Outlast by Dear Frederic (the stage name for Montreal songwriter Charles F. Huot, who used to be a
member of the band Winter Gloves.) Outlast is available on iTunes for $5.
