I would very much like to understand the algorithm Netflix uses to make recommendations to its subscribers. It isn’t that the recommendations I get aren’t interesting to me, it’s the justifications for them that cause me puzzlement.
Metropolis was recommended to me because I liked Casablanca, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Annie Hall.
Nosferatu was recommended because I liked Rear Window and Forbidden Planet.
And my favourite for this month: Macbeth (starring Patrick Stewart) was suggested because I liked Psycho, and Eddie Izzard: Live From Wembly.
Robert Thurman on Buddhism was recommended because I appreciated Coco Before Chanel.
