Jay Firestone and Vanessa Piazza (LOST GIRL) and Mallozzi (STARGATE) are the series’ producers. The premise of the show, for those who have not read the books, is this: Six people wake up on a spaceship with no memories of who they are or how they got there. On board with them is an android and a cargo hold full of weapons. They also know their destination, a mining colony threatened with war. The six human crew are:
Jace Corso, played by Mark Bendavid
Portia Lin, played by Melissa O’Neil
Ryo Tetsuca, played by Alex Mallari Jr.
Tas, played by Jodelle Ferland
Marcus Boone, played by LOST GIRL’s Anthony Lemke
Griffin Jones, played by CONTINUUM’s Roger Cross.
The two part DARK MATTER pilot is directed by T.J. Scott (the photographer behind the IN THE TUB books), who also directed four episodes of ORPHAN BLACK, as well as seven episodes of XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS. Episode Three is directed by Paolo Barzman, who directed nine LOST GIRL episodes, the most recent being Here Comes the Night. Guest stars in the Pilot will include Amanda Brugel (Sex After Kids), STARGATE’s Tori Higginson, and Chloe Rose (LOST GIRL 4.3). DARK MATTER will have a summer permiere on SyFy (US).
The 2014 film PATCH TOWN, in which Palmer stars as Bethany, should also be released in the US and Canada in the summer, and the entire 2008 TV series THE GUARD (Die Küstenwache), with Zoie Palmer as Carly Greig is now available on DVD (zone 2) from Amazon.de for €28 (plus shipping).
Emily Andras, who co-wrote episodes #4 and #9 of KILLJOYS, will adapt the latest Nora Roberts trilogy for television. DARK MAGICK (named after book three), is set in Ireland. Andras told Gregg David of TV,eh: “If I had my druthers I would only work on a show in the female-driven genre going forward and Blood Magick really ticks all of those boxes,” she says. “It’s all about the power of magic, it has an incredibly strong female protagonist, it has very high stakes and themes of family and love. And it doesn’t hurt that it’s set in one of the most beautiful counties in Ireland.”
