As Alexis Rose might say, SCHITT’S CREEK is ROTFLMAO funny.
The motel clerk (Emily Hampshire) has a deadpan humour reminiscent of Bob Newhart, and the second Newhart show, the one with the bed and breakfast in Vermont, had a fish-out-of-water premise a bit like SHITT’S CREEK. But there the similarities end. What is this show about? David Rose (in episode 2) describes his most recent gallery exhibit, and could be metaphorically describing the intent of the show:
“The gallery worked with Janet Kempflugen. She’s a Brooklyn-based performance artist. She would walk into the space wearing a clay mask of a fawn, remove her clothing, and breast feed members of the
audience. It was a commentary on income inequality.”
The Rose family, whose money came from a chain of video stores, bought a town called SCHITT’S CREEK as a joke in the 90’s. When their accountant fled to the Caymans with their money and failed to pay their taxes, the government took everything. The Roses were allowed to keep the town, as it was determined to have no value. The Rose family consists of:
Moira Rose (Catherine O’Hara), a former soap star whose character, Vivian Blake, was known for slapping people. She is not adapting well to her change of circumstance.
David Rose (Dan Levy), a gallerist and the intellectual of the bunch. He gets a migrane whenever his father discusses business.
Alexis Rose (Annie Murphy), a spoiled rich girl looking for adventure and ultinately to be rescued by some sort of prince charming. Spends lots of time on social media. Knows how to have fun.
Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy), the patriarch of the family, who doesn’t seem to mind being poor, and is lookkng for a challenge. “If we have to fix this town up, [he says to a disheartened Moira] then we fix it up. We fix it up bit by bit, and it’s going to take
hard work, but we can do it, because we’re Roses.”
Roland Schitt (Chris Elliott), the passive-agressive Mayor and his wife Jocelyn (Jennifer Robertson) are the powers that be in SCHITT’S CREEK. They harbour a thinly disguised, polite resentment toward the Roses.
CBC has already renewed SCHITT’S CREEK for a second season. Some US network should pick this up, but if this show airs in the US, will the title change into something full of asterisks as happened with S**T MY DAD SAYS?
SCHITT’S CREEK airs Tuesdays at 9pm Eastern on CBC.
