LOST GIRL – Season 5 Episode 5 – SPOILERS
Nobody knows what to get Bo for her birthday so Lauren and Tamsin get her a plot device, a magical stuffed cat that brings luck to (and eventually destroys) its owner. This leads to some of the best scenes Anna Silk has had in the series as she gradually transforms into a cat.
Cassie (Vanessa Matsui) has dinner with someone named Heratio (Noam Jenkins). who she met through an online dating service. He turns out to be nice enough to warrant an invite back to her place. He kisses her goodnight, and leaves. Cassie is happy for about a minute, and then begins screaming. When Bo looks for her the next day, Cassie’s apartment is bloodied, and she is nowhere to be found.
A captive Cassie speed dials Bo by accident, and Bo decides to use her newly found favourable luck to locate the oracle. She blindfolds herself and hops behind the wheel of the Camaro. Tamsin and Lauren are reluctant to ride with a blind driver, but Tamsin decides that she trusts Bo enough to do it, so both of them get in the car. It should be pointed out that 1969 American automobiles were not equipped with seat belts.
Meanwhile, back at the Dal, Mark inadvertently helps Iris (Mesenger to the Gods of Olympus, played by Shanice Banton) to steal Trick’s ledger with all the signatures of all the fae who have visited the Dal. (Mark allows himself to be seduced and the writers passed up a perfect opportunity to make Mark bisexual. All they had to do was have Mark be seduced by a male fae.) Later, during a bar fight with Kat’s boyfriend (played by Michael Dufays), Mark inadvertently causes Lauren to get a face full of birthday cake. What will Mark inadvertently do next? (Lauren does not believe in good luck charms, hence the cat conveys bad luck upon her, but none of it is very serious.)
The face-in-the-cake scene would certainly have worked better with Ksenia Solo there to comment. As it was, Zoie Palmer had to do that herself. She did it well, but it was an ‘I miss Kenzi’ moment. And that gift Trick gave Bo would have been so much funnier had Kenzi been there.
The dude who ends up with Trick’s book is named Heratio and might have something to do with the Greek goddess Hera. If Hera found out that (for example) Zeus got Aife pregnant and then hid her with Hades in Hel, the goddess just might be ticked off. Such a thing would not be out of character for Zeus, who is possibly interchangeable with Odin (The Wanderer) in this narrative.
At episode’s end, Bo finally gets a decent birthday present, a gift-wrapped Tamsin. Now that’s the sort of thing a succubus needs.
Dax Ravina (Cassie’s cousin Seymour) is Charlie in the film 88 which was released in the US on 6 January. Other LOST GIRL folk in 88 are Kyle Schmid and Stephannie Hawkins (Tamsin’s stunt double). In the film, a young woman (Katherine Isabelle), finding herself in a roadside diner with no knowledge of how she got there, goes on a quest to find the person responsible for her lover’s death.
For those who missed the 11 January premiere of A NOVEL ROMANCE, the film will next air on the Hallmark Channel on 17 January at 5pm. It will air three more times in February. The cast features LOST GIRL’s Tammy Gillis as Nina and ORPHAN BLACK’s Dylan Bruce as Liam Bradley.
