In recent episodes, Kiera has “remembered” recovering from a future plague, and learned that the corporation that provided the cure for the disease also probably invented it. She remembered going against orders to rescue two children, and having the expense of doing that added to her life debt. In this episode, the former Protector remembers busting a meeting of people who where trying to save an historic building from demolition, and watching her mother be arrested.
Along with that, the excesses and obvious corruption of her boss Inspector Dillon (Brian Markinson) make her want to understand what made Betty reach out to Liber8.
So Betty (Jennifer Spence), who is both amazed and pleased at Kiera’s “switching horses”, and free of her ankle bracelet (apparently Dillon trusts her now), goes out with Kiera and Carlos for a drink, and to discuss strategy. Betty takes a call from a tech dude who may have programmed an attack for which Liber8 was framed. She goes outside alone to meet him but before he can tell her anything, the two of them are gunned down by someone in a black SUV.
Earlier, in the flash forward, Kiera’s mother (Gabrielle Rose) suggests that Kiera became a protector as an act of rebellion against her mother’s idealism. Kiera identifies with Betty as someone similar to her mother, and Betty’s death will most likely cause both Kiera and Carlos to commit fully to the cause of bringing down Dillon and his corporate associates.
Garza (Luvia Peterson) is doing some outreach. She contacts Kiera and establishes a level of cooperation with her. Garza also approaches Alec’s half-brother (Richard Harmon) at what is a low point in his life (he has been discredited by a nefarious corporate plot too involved to go into here). Garza takes him under her wing, or at least into her car. A soft-spoken Garza is both different and interesting.
