THE CRAZY ONES – Season 1 Episode 18 – SPOILERS
SIMON: Spoiler alert: We have a fifth round of auditions for Krispy Kreme today. We are going to find that spokeswoman
ZACH: Do you know how hard it’s going to be to find a hot skinny girl who believably loves donuts?
The episode is titled MARCH MADNESS, and it aired just before that annual basketball thing pre-empted this show (and many others) for a few weeks. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar turns up in a cameo role. The story is green-themed (St. Patrick’s Day and jealousy, not environmental sustainability).
The Krispy Kreme guy starts off wanting the perfect woman for his ad, but then he sees Sydney and decides he wants “cute normal”. Mention is made of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty that used women of all shapes, sizes, and colours. Syd is happy to be the donut spokesperson (she is less happy to be called ‘cute normal’), but as soon as she leaves the room, Lauren (Amanda Setton) shows up and the client goes right back to the original perfect woman idea and chooses her instead.
We get some backstory on Andrew. His six sisters show up, all of whom are big drinkers, and all of whom are grade school teachers. We also learn that Andrew’s last name is Keanelly. (That means wolfs-head, although that does not seem to have any immediate significance.) Here’s a list of the six Keanelly sisters and the actors who played them:
Katherine – Jamie Denbo
Elaine – Jessica Chafin
(Denbo and Chafin are the comedy team of Ronna & Beverly whose 2008 cancelled Showtime pilot became something of a phenomenon and gained them not inconsiderable internet fame.)
Molly – Carmella Riley
(Molly is the one who gropes Simon.)
Eileen – Stephanie Cannon
Ellen – Lauren Pritchard
Helen – Anna Vocino
When Syd announces to the sisters that she will be Krispy Kreme spokeswoman, Elaine asks her to sign her boobs. Sydney is flattered and happily complies. When Lauren tells Sydney she has been replaced, Syd displays no jealousy. Gellar merges with her character at this point, using an excerpt from the Maltese Falcon themed Duncan Hines ad she and Seth Green did when she was a child. Sydney, you see, appeared in this and other ads as a child, and reveals that her secret to line-learning was to reward herself with a piece of candy whenever she delivered a line properly. This backfires on Lauren when she later over-uses the notion and it gets her fired from the ad campaign. It is unknown if Krispy Kreme decided to use Sydney after all.
The gang builds a St. Patrick’s Day float with the help of the Keanelly sisters, Sydney admits to Lauren that she was a little jealous. They hug. Simon (Robin Williams) tells the story about when he French-kissed Wolf Blitzer on Ted Turner’s yacht.
THE CRAZY ONES tweeted on 20 March that: “The 1 hour Season 1 finale of the #CrazyOnes will air on Thurs, April 17th at 9/8c” That would seem to indicate, since there are four episodes left in the season, that a new episode will next air on 3 April.
