The traditional holiday films seems to be IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE and THE WIZARD OF OZ. It is tiresome to repeat these every year. I have seen these films so often I can speak the dialogue along with the characters. It’s time to find a replacement.
Characteristics shared by these two films are:
- ordinary people as major characters
- a supernatural aspect or influence
- an implausible plot with
- an unreasonably optimistic outcome
All of these qualities are shared by a Sarah Michelle Gellar film, SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE. It tells of an aspiring chef whose family restaurant is going under. It is not a great film, like the aforementioned classics, but it is a very pleasant and cheery film and it is a welcome change from endless versions of Scrooge and the other standard holiday fare.
So once each year at when my cable provider decides there is to be nothing on TV but Santa, Scrooge, Jimmy Stewart, and Judy Garland, I will be watching Amanda Shelton as she cooks her way to happiness with the help of an angelic cabbie, and a talking crab.
